Bhādrapada (भाद्रपद) māsa, Śukla Pakṣa Pratipat
भाद्रपदकृत्यं महाभारते---
प्रौष्ठपद्ये तु यो मासे एकाहारो भवेन्नरः।
धनाद्यं स्फीतमतुलमैश्वर्यं प्रतिपद्यते॥
वामनपुराणे---
मासि भाद्रपदे दद्यात्यायसं मधुसर्पिषा।
हृषीकेशप्रीणनार्थं लवणं सगुडोदनम्॥ इति।
bhAdrapada-mAsaH begins today — As stated in the Mahābhārata, a person who observes the month with the discipline of eating only once a day (ekāhāra) attains immense and incomparable wealth, beginning with riches and prosperity. In the Vāmana Purāṇa, it is said that during Bhādrapada, one should make offerings to please Hṛṣīkeśa (Viṣṇu) –— this includes donating iron, ghee mixed with honey, salt, and jaggery-rice (guḍodana).Names
